Carbonix

Carbon materials

Beyond iron.

Advanced carbon materials for water treatment, tailings management and energy storage. Each line is a candidate for origination under the same royalty principle as P180: partners make and supply the materials under licence, and Carbonix keeps a royalty.

These lines come from more than a decade of Carbonix carbon-materials work, the same work that produced P180. They turn petroleum coke and wood into specialized carbons for oil sands, mining, industrial water and battery applications, and the proprietary Carbon Scaffold Platform tailors pore structure and surface chemistry to each treatment need.

Water treatment and tailings

Validated at lab or bench scale

Metals and selenium

Formulations matched to contaminant and water chemistry: iron- and manganese-modified petcoke carbon for arsenic, surface-treated carbon for chromium, and iron-functionalized waste-wood carbon for selenium.

Applications

Mining and industrial wastewater

Tailings flocculants

Activated carbon–polyacrylamide hybrids flocculate mature fine tailings, binding particles into larger aggregates for settling, consolidation and water recovery. A lower-cost grade using untreated petcoke has been identified.

Validation

Higher drained solids

Lab tests; Coanda benchtop testing

Next lines for origination

Hard carbon from biomass

Hard carbons from hardwood and softwood, with engineered pore structures and controlled pore-size distributions. Grades serve as functionalized adsorbents and as sodium-ion battery anodes.

Key attributes

Surface area and pore-size distribution control

Adsorbent and sodium-ion anode grades

Synthetic graphite

Synthetic graphite made from petroleum coke, the same feedstock behind Carbonix’s water-treatment carbons, extends the suite into energy storage.

Application

Lithium-ion battery anodes

Tailored carbons

Carbons made by methane pyrolysis over specific catalysts, including nanotubes for electronics and advanced materials.

Applications

Battery, composite and defence materials

Also targeted

Carbon blacks for reinforcement and pigments, carbon catalysts for energy storage and conversion, CO₂-capture carbons and critical-mineral recovery.
